methionine rich meat
Hi Fiona,
We are working to get our homocysteine levels down and I saw where
Dr. Ron said, "cutting back on coffee and methionine-rich meat will
help to some degree." p. 179
When I looked up methionine rich foods I found that this is in
fish, red meat, dairy, ham, beans, poultry, eggs, and others.
1) Is he talking about beef?
2) Does it matter if it's grain fed vs. grass fed?
Speaking of beef. We read that grass fed beef has more Omega 3's in it than fish. So is it ok to eat this in place of fish which could contain mercury?
The more I know the more I don't know!
Thank you,
Jean Ann

We have never heard that grass fed beef has more Omega 3's than fish. Eating a good wild deep water fish will give you a much reacher source of omega 3. The most important would be that the meat is organic and not filled with antibiotics etc. All meat is grass fed, what matters is if it was sent to a feed lot at the end to fatten up. Most women can eat a little more meat, but males and women post menopause should check their ferritin (iron) levels, as too much is not good. The best way to get homocysteine levels down is not to eat high protein.
Supplements that help are; B6, B12, biotin

Hi Fiona,
Thank you for your reply. We have started the supplements for you suggested. I also tried to find the site about the beef. Here is an excerpt and the web address. We eat much more fish than beef like Dr. Ron suggested.
Grassfed Beef is higher in Omega 3 than fish
Normally a good ratio for omega 6:3 in fish is 2 or 3 to 1. The lower the better. Grassfed beef from Grassfed Organics is much higher in Omega 3 than fish, with a 6:3 ratio of 0.16 to 1. This information is from a study done at Iowa State University in August 2001.

It is so great to have someone to help us sort all this out. We always appreciate your advice.
