alternative to Vitamin E supplementation (Astaxanthin)?
Hi Rosedale Support,
I have been seeing a lot of press regarding the antioxidant
Astaxanthin.
Would you know if Astaxanthin could be used as an alternative to
Vitamin E, as a Rosedale acceptable supplement?
(i also asked this question under the 'Problems' area by mistake, instead of here, sorry)

Astaxanthin is an antioxidant in the same class as beta-carotene. As such, its functions are similar. Unlike most others, I am not a large believer in antioxidants having tremendous health benefits. I think they can help somewhat under certain circumstances. For optimal health they need to be turned on or off depending on particular needs. It is where, when, and how antioxidants are used in the body that will determine its benefits or not. Though astaxanthin is a powerful antioxidant, this does not necessarily make it better. Lycopene found in tomatoes has a deeper red color because of it's more concentrated pigment and is therefore perhaps an even more powerful antioxidant. Astaxanthin may help protect fish oils especially from oxidation.

Thanks for your personal reply Dr. Rosedale,
Do you still recommend supplementing with 2 x 400 IU Vitamin E (Natural, preferably with mixed tocopherols) as per your Supplement Plan 1 in your book.

I know that Dr. Ron still takes 2 x 400 IU Vitamin E, until our new supplements are ready anyway.

We take mixed tocopherols rather than plain vit E, that generally means alpha tocopherols, or you can take high gamma E, which is sometimes harder to find.
