Type 2 husband glucose elevations
Hi from Mary in Chattanooga. I would like to ask for comments on my husband's diabetes history that went fifteen years with stable readings with diet and supplements, but when we went gluten free 3 years ago, his iron levels tripled and the glucose readings went up,
I researched this and found his Irish ancestry had a risk of a gene mutation hemochromatosis, that keeps iron in the body too high and iron blocks the action of insulin, so I took him off the iron pills he took for m8 years for anemia and he had the gene test for HH which was negative, but the glucose readings kept going up, so I figured our low carb diet could be a factor---
we wanted to add more saturated fat and are using coconut oil, but I have gotten confused from the info out there, his Irish ancestry still places him at risk for other gene mutations now being discovered that mess up the iron levels.
I even thought maybe the gluten is ok, it does block iron which can interfere with insulin function. I found this info in Spain! Just wondering how to get back to where we were for 15 years of good control after losing it with gluten free/lower carb diet----?
Thanks from a worried wife.

So sorry, for some reason your message just came in to us now. It is good for men to have their iron (ferritin) levels tested from time to time, especially as you mentioned your husband was anemic in the past as you want to keep an eye on that for sure. On the flip side too much iron in the body will rust and cause all kinds of issues. If his levels are still too high then just go and have him donate blood. Note on gluten, just because it is gluten free does not mean it is low carb at all, in fast many gluten free items are really high sugar. Dr. Ron's patients have had amazing success, but it seems we are not on the same page if you are doing just a gluten free diet. Dr. Ron's book is super cheap on amazon now, I feel that if you get it and follow it you will see a really great improvement in your husband. Also on the website there are diet outlines.
