Potassium, Magnesium, Sodium, & Other Minerals

Hey everyone!

I had a quick question regarding mineral requirements. If this has already been addressed in previous posts, I apologize for asking again.

Dr. Rosedale mentions that most people will need approximately 200mg of potassium for the first two months of adapting to his diet plan. My question is, do these requirements decrease after the first few months once the body has become keto-adapted? If not, why do these requirements for exogenous minerals decrease once the body is fully keto-adapted?

Instinctually, I would imagine that once the body is fully adapted to using ketones, mineral deposits in the urine would decrease along with the ketone 'spill over', but I'm not sure if this is correct.

Could someone help me? Why do we mineral support only for the first few months of Dr. Rosedale's diet, but not the following months while remaining on the diet?

Thank you so much for your help. :)

As insulin is reduced and insulin sensitivity increased, there is a diuresis such that excess fluids are released in the urine. This is one mechanism whereby blood pressure is reduced as are puffy ankles, et cetera. However, part and parcel of this diuresis is a loss of potassium and magnesium.

That explains why my blood pressure went from being in the 150s-170s / 90s-100s for around 20 plus years, down to 90s / 60s within the first 5wks of starting your plan - I am off 2 ace inhibitors, 3 channel blockers and 1 diuretic that was a daily routine for years but never did bring my pressure down. I was always being told well let us try this & this, by more than one doctor over the years. My pressure now runs in the 120s-140s / 80s-90s range - no meds. It is a lot more stable now and I don't have those constant headaches or the pain in my heart as before. I am looking forward to the days ahead as my body organs, etc go thru some needed repair - the high prolonged blood pressure and high blood sugar were not friends.

Thank you for the work that you do ...

    And just to clarify,

That diuresis only occurs for the first few months on the diet correct? So individuals would have to supplement only for a short period of time?

What about for endurance athletes? Would their exogenous mineral requirements be the same as non-athletes on the diet?

    Answer:

    Hi there,
after the first few weeks there is no need for potassium, as it is plentifull in our agriculture. The top minerals used are calcium, potassium and phosphorus,.

Magnesium, however, is not, and should be supplemented continuously, as with other minerals.
My top would be, magnesium, chromium, iodine, and strontium.

    Hope this helps

    Hi Alan

    Dr. Ron's Book:

    • Page 157 says 400 mcg

    • Page 158 says 400 mg

My thoughts are that the 400 mg should be mcg

Hopefully Fiona or Dr. Ron will have time to give better details, but I went with the mcg
