protein requirements

I have been paleo/Blood type dieting (high protein) for 4 years and dispite being low carb, you guessed it, I still have blood sugar issues. My Bs numbers are all within normal ranges but if I eat too much protein at a time, I feel I get insulin surges. Now, after following the Rosedale diet, I hardly want protein. I feel best with about an ounce at a time on a green salad 4 times a day. I was wondering, since the book says to split protein into three meals, would it be OK to eat an ounce say 4 of 5 times a day, or is that stacking and raising insulin too often? I find I'm having a hard time getting 40g without eating too much at a time to avoid these surges. Perhaps since I just recently cut back further on protein I just need a "wash out" time, then things may get better? I wasn't eating a ton before, probably around 55 but most recently only about 35-40. I'm not sure that's enough. I'm 5'7 and 118. I also notice when my insulin seems wacky I gain a few pounds and as soon as my blood sugar numbers come down, it falls right off. I don't eat starch, just leafy greens, good oils and some nuts along with 25 or so grams of animal protein. Is that enough? I certainly feel better but don't want to catabolise myself. Animal protein certainly seems to raise my blood sugar about 20-25 points, even at 15g

Thank you

You are very in tune with your body, this is great! Dr. Ron wants is to spread it out verses eating no protein all day and have it all right before you go to bed. So you are doing good, try not let it drop below 35 grams though especially if you are a little more active.

    Hi Kristin,

"Way to go". I see that you are working thru the ins & outs of pursuing a healthier life, this is great.

May I ask what is the type of animal protein that you eat most. Is there a certain group that seems to raise your BS the most.

    • Is it from a grain fed or grass fed animal?

    Pursuing a healthier life also,

Ken, I definately favor fish, salmon, tuna, cod and tilapia but when I do have beef, it ia always grass fed. I sometimes have an Applegate farms organic grass fed hot dog too but I seem to do better with lamb. Chicken isn't always my friend though I do love it and I did stock up on whole organic free range turkeys at Thanksgiving. More than the "type" of protein, it seems to be the amount. 15g raises me about 20 points. My sugars have pretty much always been under 125 unless I eat larger quantities but it is more the insulin surges that I feel that bother me. They seem to unbalance me. Right now I'm trying a "wash out" for a few weeks and doing around 10g at lunch and dinner and none at breakfast. Of course I do get some vegetable protein in there. My sugars have been in the 80's and 90's all day. I know I NEED animal protein but I also NEED to reset something. I've tried every macronutrient combination possible and can not seem to get satisfied for long. Every day is different. I definately favor small meals too, but lots of them, LOL. Working on that as well. Fat is my friend. I snack on homemade flavored mayo with veggies and that seems to be what satisfies me the most. If I have too much protein, I get hungrier than before I ate. Nuts lately seem to make me ravenous too so I just purged those. I don't mind a little hunger but the ravenous thing has got to go.Are there certain foods that raise you more?

    (Q) Are there certain foods that raise you more?

    (A) Not at the moment - my sugars run in the 70s - 80s

(quote) I definately favor small meals too, but lots of them — I snack on homemade flavored mayo with veggies and that seems to be what satisfies me the most.

    (Q) what are the ingredients in the mayo and what would be the name of the veggies?

    (Q) Does the fish raise your BS more than the beef?

the mayo is my condensed version. 1 egg, scant 1/2t sea salt and 1 cup olive oil. then add ins are herbs or shirachi, horseradish or whatever I'm in the mood for. I use celery, broccoli, scallions. zucchini, radishes, mushrooms and bok choy for the most part. Since this "wash out", my fastings are around 65 and stay there to low 70's until I eat protein. Not sure what that's all about. I know I need protein so I'm just going to try this "reset"/low protein for a bit and hope things stabalize.
As far as fish raising more, nothing is consistant there. That's my problem, NOTHING is consistant other than protein raising me., Any ideas on that? I'm not sure how else to keep my insulin low
