protein totals; nuts as protein
Hi Fiona,
I'm trying to get back on track with my diet. Life's circumstances
happened and my willpower has gone out the window - just a little
cheating here, then just a bit more, then rationalizations, then
full blown eat what you want. :(
So, in the midst of being depressed because I blew it, it seems I'm eating basically nuts and almond cookies most of the day. I know we can have all the nuts we want - a little at a time - but what I'm doing is so not what y'all meant. :)
My questions:
1 - I'm fixing a turkey sausage made from fresh ground turkey and spices. I remember I'm only supposed to eat about 15 gr of protein at a meal. I got out my scales - because you said you were eating more than you thought - and I am shocked. My sausage measures 4 x 4 x 1/2" round (uncooked; it shrank after cooking) and weighs 3.7 oz or 105 gr. If I break up the sausage into the approximate correct weight I would only get a forkful. Does this sound right or am I missing something in my calculations?
2 - I tried to find this in the book this morning but never could- maybe I read it on the web-site somewhere- about not counting the protein in nuts as a count toward the daily protein total. Is this correct?
I'm always hungry!!! even before I started cheating. I started the diet a year ago and have lost the inches and weight I was aiming for. I know my problem is because I really, really don't like to eat vegetables and I don't like to take the time to cook, and I get tired of salads. About the only time I ever enjoy eating is when it's something like a cream based soup. I'm going to really make an effort to get back on track not just for my sake but for my husbands. Being on Dr. Ron's diet helped him so much and he's having more health issues again so we both have to commit. His blood pressure is going up and my blood sugar is over 100 again.
I'm so glad you and Dr. Ron are here helping so many people get their health back.
Sincerely,
Jean Ann

Dear Jean Ann,
It happens, and practice will make you better at anything you set your mind to. You know it works, and that you both feel so much better when doing it right, but it does take some effort. I find being around others that eat a similar way makes it much easier as well. So your protein question, you are weighing the protein, so it is not the weight as that will include the fat and water but you need to know just the protein amount. Here is a great website http://nutritiondata.self.com/ where you can plug in your ground turkey weight and it will tell you how much protein you are really having, It is great that you used common sense as well.. can I really only have a fork sized piece.. that just did not make sense. That gut feel will always keep you on the right side, it often happens when I go out and though they said the salad had balsamic and olive oil I knew it tasted far to sweet so now i just always get the dressing (oil/vinegar) on the side. If you were always hungry, then something was not right, not eating enough fat is a common error. Also do you have some extra fat around your middle to lose, because if you were in fat burning mode you would be eating all the time and the first thing people say after a few weeks is that they are just not hungry. Check the protein and also that you are not getting sugars somehow. The protein in the nuts you will count, it is protein and you are eating them ;-).. Keep us posted.

Hi Fiona,
You are such a blessing!
I love the nutrition web-site. I've had so much fun plugging food in and seeing the totals.
Here are a couple of more questions if you have time:
1 - Do we count the carbs in the nuts? example almonds are 15% carbs
2 - Do we count the carbs in the vegetables?
3 - Is it better to eat the fatter nuts like macadamia because they have less protein and carbs?
4 - I'm trying to figure out why I woke up sweating last night. I just calculated my salad that I ate last night with the web-site and I had about 19 gr. protein but then I ate probably 1 1/2 ounces of mixed nuts, which would have put me over my total amount of protein that I needed. I read Dr. Ron's article about how too much protein will heat us up and was wondering if that's probably what happened.
5 - About the flab. I guess I do have a bit left, I can pinch it. I am 62, weigh 120 lbs, waist is 28", hips are 35". I am now in a size 6 jeans which are getting loose. Is this about right or do I need to continue to try and reduce more
I can't tell you how peaceful it is to have so much support from you and the others on your team. Without y'all I would feel like I was just floundering trying to figure it all out on my own.
Very grateful,
Jean Ann

The carbs minus the fiber = true converted sugar.. or net carbs. http://nutritiondata.self.com/facts/nut-and-seed-products/3085/2 so in 23 almonds there is 6 - 3 = 3 net carbs, that is pretty low carb for 23 almonds. Veggies are pretty high fiber as well, just pass on the starchy veggies, surprisingly onions have quite a bit of sugar but do have other qualities so enjoy them just don't go overboard on them. Macadamia's are good, pistachios I get them in the shell just because it slows you down from eating too many at once, Cashews are a little higher in net carbs so mix a few in but not too many.
How tall are you?.. though from your measurements you seem to be quite balanced. If you feel you are losing too much weight, just raise your fat in take.
Interesting about the heat.. it could be the extra protein but it also be many other things as well. Just like your car, so much healthier to run cooler than hotter, unless you have a fever which is needed to have your immune system kick in.
Glad that we could be of help. There is also a great community within yahoo communities called 'Rosedalediet' hundreds of people following the Rosedale lifestyle, they are so supportive with great ideas. If you post a question on there and you will so amazing answers!
Best of health

Hi Fiona,
I am 5'4". I have noticed that I'm feeling better again now that I'm back on tract - my husband is feeling better too. :) I don't have any real health issues that I know of but he's had a 5 artery bypass surgery almost 2 years ago and he is not on any meds. That is why we have to really get serious about eating the right way and not let ourselves slip up.
Thank you again for all the wonderful information and the pep talk!

Yes! you do need to both stick with it and maintain the feeling better and younger longer! For your height I would imagine you to be around 45 grams of protein spread out over the day.

Hi Fiona,
I try to stay around 45-55 gr. I don't always count the nuts so it may run more than the 45 gr. My husband said I had to write you and say thank you too for your wonderful advice. Yesterday he took his blood pressure a couple of hours after his walk/run and it was 85/67. A couple of weeks ago it was 145/88. He is so excited. I'm the one who always has the low blood pressure of 80's/50's. My fasting blood sugar a couple of weeks ago was 106 and now it is 81.
So once again we are so thankful for you and the rest of the team.
Jean Ann

Dear Jean Ann
Thank you this is fantastic news! We love to keep adding to our testimonials on our site, it would be great to add something from you both as well. I can either just use the line below or you can write us something, your ages, how long on the diet, how your both feel, any medications you dropped, etc would be wonderful encouragement for others.
