Alcohol and Type 2 Diabetes
My husband is a type two diabetic and has been diagnosed for approximately 6 years. He eats pretty well and tests his blood sugar often. He only takes pills and has never had to take insulin. My question is two fold.
Is the test number always an indication you are doing well and eating well and you don't have anything to worry about?
My husband insists on continuing to drink alcohol. He drank Scott for several years because he read somewhere that it is okay to drink Scotch. After realizing that he could not handle the Scotch anymore due to being out of control he switched back to Beer. Although he doesn't drink as much beer as he used to he appears to supplement it with shots of Vodka. He brags when he tests his blood sugar it is not high and I know this to be true because sometimes I make him do it in front of me and it is low.
He is obviously an alcoholic and won't admit it. What can you tell me that might get his attention to stop the drinking. He pays close attention to the blood sugar tests and relies on those to tell him how he is doing.
Thank you for your time.

Dear Meme,
A little drink from time to time is ok, but as you know in larger amounts everyday is just not a good thing. Though we are probably not your best direction to turn for alcohol addiction help, you can find so much data online to show that so much drinking will be effecting a lot more than just sugars.
Wishing you the best of luck..

Thank you for your response. I realize this is not the site to get answers on alcoholism. What I was wanting to know is about the glucose tests. If they are normal or low and you are still drinking a lot of alcohol does the test always mean you are doing good and that the alcohol you are drinking is not having an affect on the diabetes? Can you still have problems and your glucose tests be normal?

Dr. Ron said, yes. Diabetes is not a disease of blood sugar it is a disease of leptin and insulin communication.
