Fish oil
I was reading that too much fish oil may actually be hazardous to your health and insulin resistance. How much Omega 3 fish oil do you recommend daily? Can this be taken for extended periods of time or when should I stop taking the fish oil?

Dear Cindy,
Omega 3 is essential so taking it every day is a good thing. On the days where we eat fish then we skip taking a teaspoon of fish oil. Dr. Rosedale recommends for those that have not been taking fish oil to take a tablespoon a day for about 10 days or so and then reduce it to a teaspoon a day. There was a study done about fish oil, causing colon cancer and I was hoping Dr. Ron would have done a blog post about it. When you read the details of the study and broke it down it was the equivalent of a human having a liter of fish oil a day, and they were also feeding the mice the fish oil rectally and not orally, in this massive quantities for sure the oil would turn rancid and cause problems. This also brings me to the point of making sure your fish oil is not rancid to begin with. Most fish oil capsules that are stored in a plastic container that will be rancid as oxygen can permeate plastic so make sure you buy fish oil in a glass bottle only.
Best of health.

Fiona,
I bought Dr. Rosedale's book,
my wife uses the supplement plan and I use the Plan Plus. On pages 156, 158 the recommendation given is 1tbs a day for the Cod Liver Oil - is there an update to the book I bought, published in 2005.
Thanks,
Ken
BTW, at one time I bought a 4 month supply of fish oil in gel caps w/plastic container - and I found out first hand about it turning rancid, had to pitch a 2 month supply - that's when we bought the cod liver oil in a bottle - much much better..

Dear Ken,
Thanks for your support and comments on our site. Everything is the same for the most part. Making sure you get vitamin D, which you get in cod liver oil. Dr. Ron is doing some research right now on the studies comparing coq10 ubiquinone and ubiquinol versions but so far as long as you opt for the softgels verses the powder version you are doing well. The new books are the same rules, only now there are so many studies to support what Dr. Ron has always said.
Keep up the great work!
