A few questions about the diet... having some difficulties

Hi, my name is Laura Griffith and my husband and I started your diet about
a week ago. So far we've had excellent weight loss results (he's lost
over 10 pounds in a week and I've lost over 7).

My husband seems to have taken to this diet very well - he doesn't have
hunger cravings, never experienced 'the shakes' and doesn't even seem to
crave sugary foods anymore. However, I'm not handling the switch nearly as
well and felt I should send a quick email ... asking for any advice?

Currently, we're on day 8 and I'm still experiencing massive weakness,
shakes, and am having major difficulty focusing... sometimes even slurring
my words a bit. Add to that list frequent headaches, short bouts of
dizzyness, and excessive sweating.... The symptoms vary, but sometimes
even just taking a shower is exhausting and I get extremely light headed
and dizzy.

So far I've only cheated on the diet twice.. both times having a small
glass of orange juice when I thought I was going to pass out...

Help? What else should I be doing? I'm eating nuts and frequent snacks
throughout the day, drinking water/almond milk/black tea, and we're having
healthy dinners with only your "A" list items...

Any advice you can give would be greatly appreciated
Laura

    Dear Laura,

It is wonderful that both you and your husband are doing the program together, congratulations. What comes to mind right away is if you are taking the essential supplements, at least magnesium, potassium and liquid fish oil like carlsons. What we suggest is the liquid fish oil as most of the fish oil capsules are rancid as they are not stored in glass bottles and flushed with nitrogen. If you are not taking these, then you will see a big difference when you do. Also, if you are having too much protein then the transition will be harder for you. Send over to me what you have been eating in brief and we can figure out what might be going wrong. The orang juice, that is like giving an alcoholic during withdrawals a shot of whiskey, what might be better would be to dig in to an avocado, or have a few blue berries. That said, your symptoms seem extreme and having a difficult time which is no fun. Have you ever measured your blood sugars and are you taking any medications as these are all a factor. We cannot give medical advise on this line but at least we can point out some factors that came up for Dr. Rosedale's patients.

Thank you for responding back to me so quickly!

I haven't been taking fish oils, I have an extreme allergy to most fish and
haven't wanted to try the oil lol I do have a daily supplement I take, but
I haven't added any other supplements since starting this diet.

As far as our diet - we've been doing chicken and turkey and some hard
boiled eggs, plus LOTS of vegetables - broccoli, asparagus, cucumber,
onion, garlic, peppers, avacados and LOTS of nuts - almonds in particular.
Generally I have some almond milk in the morning, snack on
almonds/pistachios/celery when I'm hungry thru the day. Eat a spinach
salad for lunch with lots of olives, and we have dinner later with either
chicken/turkey and steamed veggies. I recently found the torilla Dr.
Rosedale recommends (La Tortilla Factory) with super low carbs and high
fiber - when I eat one of those, I do tend to feel better... but that could
be similar to the Orange Juice thing.

The food has been amazingly good, it just feels like I'm not getting any
    energy after I eat.

I'm headed to the store soon, and will pick up some blue berries (instead
of doing Orange juice). My husband and I aren't on any meds, no
significant health problems for either one of us, and I've never had issues
with low blood sugar (though it does run in my family). I'll also pickup a
daily supplement specifically for potassium/magnesium - any you guys can
    recommend?

I appreciate your help! And I completely understand you can't give medical
advice - I was just curious if there were any glarring problems with what
    I'm doing.

This sounds typical for potassium and/or magnesium deficiency, and possibly fluid deficiency. It is mandatory that you immediately start at least 200 mg of potassium twice daily. That would be the weight of the potassium itself not the aspartate or other portion so it should be 200 mg at least of elemental potassium probably three times daily for now and then dropping to twice daily for the next month or so. Also have to make sure that you drink lots of water that is mandatory at this point, since much of the weight that you have been losing thus far as been water weight secondary to insulin dropping, and that's a good thing.

    Keep up the good work.

Solaray has a good one which you can buy at the vitamin shoppe, you can see the link below to brands we recommend. Always make sure you get a capsule verses a tablet form.

Thank you so much for the replies! I'll try the magnesium / potassium and
    see if that helps.

And yes, you can use this as a public question -- only request I have is
that you remove my phone number and Last Name. Just keep it "Laura" is
    possible.

    Thank you again :D
