Hair Loss with Weight Loss
I am 5 months into the Rosedale plan and have lost a significant amount of weight (almost 50 lbs) but I have been noticing that I am losing a lot more hair then I normally do. I am concerned. Is this common? Is there any supplements that are recommended to stop the falling out?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Can anyone help me with my question about hair loss? I seem to be losing more and more. I am really concerned and wondering if there is something that I should be doing to reverse this. If anyone has suggestions I would really appreciate it.
Thanks,
Katie

Hi. This could be a symptom of hypothyroidism or could possibly be due to hormonal changes. You didn't give your age, but menopause can also cause thinning hair. You might want to start supplementing with biotin and evening primrose oil. I have heard these are good for hair growth. Also they are good for diabetic neuropathy, at least they were for me. My wife's hair was slow to grow back after chemo so she started taking biotin. Since starting this we have noticed a marked increase in her hair growth rate. She has been taking 1000 micrograms of biotin 3x daily. You will also want to add 1000 milligrams of EPO three times a day, but you should check with your doctor first. For instance, my wife can't take the EPO since it can mimic estrogen and she has just started taking anti-hormones as part of her cancer treatment.

As far as hair loss on a low-carb diet; Dr. Ron will write a longer science based answer on our site soon. Suffice it to say that it is not that uncommon in women but if it does happen it is temporary over a few months and has to do with lowering insulin. Those that have experienced some hair falling, then also report stronger hair growth coming in. So, this is actually a true sign that inside your body, it is working like clock work and your insulin is lowering. Great job!

Thanks Fiona! I wasn't aware of that.

snallygaster.. you were also correct, that thyroid and hormones can also play a big part in hair loss so it is good to check those as well. I had some hair loss about 5 months after changing to the Rosedale program which lasted for about 3 months, and for the last 5 years have had no issues at all. My nails have gone from a lifetime of the bendy wafer thin flaking type to strong growing like weeds perfect type!

I am still experiencing a lot of hair loss. Is there any supplements that Dr Rosedale recommends? Could there be other reasons my hair is still falling? Too little protein, too little fat??

Like snallygaster mentioned, it might also be thyroid and or hormones so it would be good to have those checked if you have not already. As far as supplements, in addition to what Dr. Ron suggests in his book.. (magnesium, potasium, good fish oil in a glass bottle, etc) also inositol.
