Hi Dr Rosedale,

I have been diagnosed with severe Vitamin D deficiency (4.75 mg/dl). I thought I was getting enough sun, abviously not!
I am looking to buy the right supplement. I live in India. All pharmacies I have checked with here only have the combined Calcium+Vit D3 / Calcium+Magnesium+Zinc+Vit D3 supplement. I remember reading in one of your articles that it is not good to supplement Calcium. Which according to you is the best Vitamin D supplement ? (I am willing to get it shipped) What dosage do you recommend?

I have been following the Rosedale diet for almost a year now and here are my before and after Blood test numbers. The change is just amazing!! Thank you so much... This diet has changed my life!

Most of the world has a Vitamin D deficiency. Getting a adequate and consistent daily dose throughout the year from the sun alone is difficult.
Vitamin D can be taken without a Calcium supplement. While Vitamin D does promote the absorption of calcium, it has many other beneficial affects on cell health.

Take 5000IU daily. Since taking it my blood sugar metabolism is much better (Last A1C 4.0), I don't get colds and when I go out into the sun I don't sunburn like I used to.

    Thank you Ray and Snallygaster!

I have started taking 8500 IU/ day Vitamin D3 supplement. I will be retesting my levels in a couple of months and if I am in the normal range, I will move to a maintenance dose.

SnallyGaster, your A1C results are so encouraging. Mine has come at 5.2 this time... It would be amazing if my A1C came down to 4 too!

Hi trishamihira. Yes. Vitamin D3 is a good supplement for diabetics. 5.2 is a good A1C. I know non-diabetics in this range. Dr Bernstein recommends between 4.3 and 4.5 . My meter readings are usually no lower than 78 and no higher than 90 so I'm probably just one of those people that has an A1C that comes in lower than what my meter readings would suggest. You might also consider adding magnesium. Get a chelated version, preferable Albion patented. I take 800 mg of Bluebonnet Chelated Magnesium Glycincate. This doesn't affect my bowels like other versions. If you start taking it start with a lower dose and work your way up until your bowels get loose and then cut back the dose until things are back to normal. Anyway, good luck keep up the good work!

    Trisha,

Dr. Ron was really surprised when in India to find most people deficient in vitamin D.

    True Fiona!

Not sure why it is so...Maybe darker skin needs more sunlight to made Vitamin D? I now encourage all my friends and family to get their Vit D level tested... Everyone in my circle who got their levels tested are severely deficient! (Levels below 10)

Dark skin does not let it in as easy, and most people cover up in India. That is awesome you are getting your friends and family to test theirs! Everyone we met there was very low.
