Hair loss with weight loss?

Hello.

I started the Rosedale diet in February and have lost 35 lbs. in 4 months! :) It is working very well for me, however, I started loosing a lot of hair a little over a month ago. I would estimate that I have lost about 50% of my hair - it comes out in big clumps around my fingers in the shower, for instance. Yesterday I went to my hair stylist and she was in shock with how much hair was coming out! She seemed to think that it was much more than what is "normal" with weight loss. She kept questioning me on my diet - asking if I was eating protein inparticular. (Of course I am!) She urged me to see my doctor.

Now I know that people can experience hair loss with quick weight loss, and I am also hypothyroid (managed by taking desicated thyroid) which can add to the problem. I feel fine - even better than fine - and don't suspect my thyroid. (I had a blood panel done in January before I started the diet and the thyroid was within normal ranges.)

Is there anything else that could be causing the hair loss or is this "normal"? I wasn't really too concerned until yesterday and thought I'd ask here before heading into my doctor. I figure that I have about 30-40 lbs. to go, so hoping that I am not bald by the time I hit my ideal weight. :) Thanks!

As far as hair loss on a low carb diet; Dr. Ron will write a longer science based answer on our site soon.

Suffice it to say that it is not that uncommon in women but if it does happen it is temporary over a few months and has to do with lowering insulin.

Those that have experienced some hair falling, then also report stronger hair growth coming in. So, this is actually a true sign that inside your body, it is working like clock work and your insulin is lowering. Great job!

I will ask the doctor if there might be some supplements that might help during the transition specifically for hair.

I know that for me, I went through a few months of the same, but then it quickly passed and it seems my hair and nails are for sure stronger now. I also took some Inositol for a while, so not sure if that helped or if I just passed through that stage.

Great job.. for sure you are on your way to your goals.

    Hello,

I wholeheartedly believe in this diet, but the 2 times I have started (and re-started) I lost my hair. I would imagine that this is a factor prohibiting others from staying on this diet.

I heard a talk where Dr. Rosedale mentioned that Saw Palmetto can be helpful to lower increased Testosterone in the early stage of this diet.

Are there any other recommendations for this issue?
