I've been doing the lifestyle for over a year now and feel great. I've now been trying to get other family members to join me and have had some recent success. However one of them has had her thyroid removed several years ago do to a potential cancer growth. She's been doing the rosedale plan for about a month now and just had a checkup where they said her iron is now low. So I have 2 questions.

  1. Is this diet safe for someone with no thyroid? I'm guessing its just a matter of dialing in the medication correctly.

  2. Is the low iron related to the thyroid medication not being correct or is there something else causing it. She does eat plenty of red meat so it seems like more of an issue absorbing the iron to me.

I know the thyroid plays a big role in everything so just not sure how this all works when a person has no thyroid. This whole low iron thing has her very concerned and considering going back to the SAD diet which i really don't want to see happen. Any advise or insight on this issue you might have would be great.

    From Dr. Ron.
The diet has nothing to do with low iron. The fact that she has had her thyroid removed is irrelevant. Just dial up the thyroid until the free T3 is right around the 2.4, he said he would take T4 (synthroid) and not T3. However, if she is eating meat like you said then understanding why her iron is dropping is very important. If she is pre menopausal and has heavy periods every month she might need take an iron supplement like comfort iron which is softer on the stomach. If she is post menopausal then and her iron levels are dropping still then she needs to get her stool tested for blood to see if she is losing any in her gut. So some key factors to find out, age, pre/post menopausal.

Keep up the good work! It is wonderful to hear that you are pointing your family in the right direction!

    Health and Happiness,
    Fiona and Dr. Ron

Thanks for the info and quick reply, I will defiantly pass along the advice. So you think its just a coincidence this started around the same time she changed her diet? She is 64 and post menopausal. I will defiantly have her get her stool checked like you suggested. Knowing the age now, is there anything else you can think of to have her doctor look into, as i know most are not so good at looking outside the box on their own. They seem to mostly treat the symptoms and not find the root problem. Thanks again.

The diet does not effect iron levels, only if you eat a lot of red meat, or the opposite, you are bleeding a lot. I hate to assume anything so just checking that they did do a ferritin test to know that her iron was low, also when was the last ferritin test done and what both of the numbers. If her iron is getting lower then she is losing blood somewhere, and her doctors should be concerned about that. The stool test is the first place as often one might be losing blood there and not always see it in the stool. Continuing the diet will be very good for her.

Great, glad to hear its not the diet. I will have her get a stool test and see if i can get the ferritin levels. Thanks again for the info and advice.

You are doing a great job. Always just get to the basics, iron is made from blood, so when you eat red meat, and you are not menstruating every month, or you had a bad cut, and your iron levels are going down then the blood must leaving the body somewhere. Taking sugar and carbs out of the diet would never be able to effect the iron levels, it might be nothing, but she also might be very lucky indeed if she does have blood in her stool to get attention sooner verses later.

Well they tested her stool and other stuff and found nothing, however they checked the iron again and now its back up. Just curious if Dr. Ron has any idea as to what could have caused it to drop and then return, as they couldn't give her an explanation other than everything is normal now.

That does seem quite odd, possibly a faulty reading..
