Acide reflux and Erratic blood sugar
Dear Dr Rosedale
I've been following your advice on low carb dieting but two years ago I
begun experiencing acid reflux, and an immediate blood sugar spike. Dieting
would usually place me in the normal range but now that I'm having acid
reflux problems I simply cannot control the blood sugar without medication.
Metformin doesn't work for me but Glycozide medication does. I know that
the Glycozide stimulate the pancreas. I'm 49 years old.
I've recently read that Magnesium deficiency can cause a range of problems
of which erratic blood sugar levels is one. The article also explained that
gastric conditions could be the cause of depleted mg. I've recently
started using magnesium and saw immediate results of normal blood sugar
readings however, after a few weeks the high readings persisted even though
I continued with the mg. My hopes were dashed because I thought I found the
problem.
Can you please shed some light on the matter?
Gavin

Dear Gavin,
That is odd for sure. Dr. Ron is out of town at a conference right now but when he returns I will ask him your question. By the way, Is Glycozide a Sulfonylureas? we have slightly different names here.
Best of health.

Hi Fiona
Yes, I think it is a Sulfonylures.
The brand I am currently using is "Adco Glucomed"
Thanks for passing this on to Dr Rosedale.
Warm regards
Gavin

Gavin all I can tell you is that regarding all of Dr. Ron's patients if they arrive on Sulfonylureas or DPP4-inhibitors, they reamin on them for not much longer. We are working on another blog post that goes into the different classes of diabetic drugs and what they really do long term. In the mean time see the link below to an interview regarding diabetic drugs. So, you are a type I diabetic?

No, no. I am pre-diabetic. And rarely use drugs. My preference is Dr Rosedale's low carb diet plus supplements he recommends. I've had lots of success with these. My concern is the acid reflux association with high blood sugar readings. Also the supposed magnesium deficiency.
Kind Regards
Gavin

That is great news. It sounds like it might take a lot more digging to get to the root cause. Dr. Ron would not be able to do that via our support line here but if there is something that comes to mind I will be sure to pass it on to you.
