Diabetes question

I read Dr. Rosedale's article about diabetes and leptin resistance. I am a 57 yr old female with type 1 diabetes, diagnosed 17 yrs ago. I eat very healthy low carb, non starchy foods but have put on 15 lbs over the past two years. Up until now I have always been the perfect weight for my height and now I am battling excess fat mostly in my abdominal area. Since I am on insulin (via an insulin pump), is it possible I have leptin resistance?
thanks,
Mary

There could be so many things that might be effecting your weight; thyroid, cortisone, hormons, and several others. What we do find is that people on an insulin pump do end up having more insulin than they need. How much insulin are you having per day?

I average 30 units/day of Humalog, 16 of this is my basal insulin.

Dr. Ron said there are many factors here. Firstly, are you for sure a type 1 diabetic, did you ever have a C-peptide done and if so what was the result. Many diabetics are wrongly diagnosed. The next step would be to establish a little more about you, are you a little petite lady or a tall more heavy set type, so weight, height and an idea of what you think your ideal weight would be. Right off the cuff it Dr. Ron does feel you might be taking too much insulin which might be contributing to your weight gain. HOWEVER, we cannot treat over this help line with such little knowledge of your personal situation.

We are very happy for you that you are paying attention to your body and are looking for other possible options. Often depending on drugs and the amount of insulin a person has been taking, sometimes we can catch it in time before a persons islets cells are totally burnt out, hopefully this might be the case in your situation.

    Best of health.

I was tested for islet cells about 3 yrs after I was initially diagnosed and was told then I was type 1. The first three years I was on glucophage and it was keeping my BSL's down but then suddenly it stopped working. So I am certain that I am not type 2. But I am not sure what test was used to come to this conclusion.

As far as my height/weight, I am 5'9" tall with a small frame. My ideal weight is 145 lbs but now I am at 160. I have gained 3 inches in my waist and 2 inches in my hips for no obvious reason. My diet and exercise has not changed and my insulin levels are about the same as they were before the weight gain. The only thing I am suspicious of is I started taking bio-identical female hormones (estradiol patch + progesterone) about 3 yrs ago for severe night sweats and sleep problems. I asked my doctor if these could be causing the weight gain and she said no. My thyroid has been checked and it usually is on the low side of normal but I did not want to start thyroid meds unless I had to. My A1C level is usually around 6.2.
    Thanks for your help.

Most of the time when "bio identical" hormone therapy is used, too much estrogen is given. You definitely need to get this checked, i.e diagnosTechs salivary post menopausal kit. Too high estrogen can and will cause weight gain.

    Best of health.
